“Many people think that psychiatric disorders are just related to the psychological signs; they don’t believe they have molecular indications, so it’s really important to show that the biochemistry of the body completely changes with psychiatric disease,” says Dr. Alessandra Sussulini, assistant professor of analytical chemistry at the University of Campinas, Brazil. But, just how is that being shown? The answer might lay in the heart of Sussulini’s latest research, which is looking at the types and quantities of metabolites in the cells, tissues, and organs of people who have bipolar disorder or treatment-resistant depression.
