Most people associate psychedelics with the free-spirited mindset of the 60s and 70s, but the use of psychedelic substances for the purposes of healing the mind and body and enhancing spirituality is something that humans have been doing since ancient times. Stephen Gray is the head of the Spirit Plant Medicine Conference, which is in its ninth year. He’s also an editor and contributor to a book called Cannabis and Spirituality and has been involved in the use of psychedelics for nearly 40 years.

On today’s episode, he describes what it’s like to go to a peyote ceremony in the Native American church, and how the use of ayahuasca, psilocybe mushrooms, iboga, peyote, cannabis, huachuma (San Pedro), LSD, and MDMA is not done for the purposes of escaping or avoiding reality, but finding different versions of reality. He also discusses the common experience of identifying and working through past traumas with the assistance of these substances.
